The more I talk about Fearless Leadership, the scarier it gets it seems. Some leaders are embracing it fully and whole heartedly, and some leaders are pushing back and saying there is no such thing, you cannot ever be fearless!
I am intrigued with this fear of “fearless leadership!” I really do believe there is such thing as “Fearless Leadership”; it is attainable and is available for any woman who is willing to be curious and insanely courageous for 20 seconds.
The reason I believe it is possible and attainable is because the fear I am talking about as it relates to Fearless Leadership is the fear we learned as a woman.
Want to guess what I am talking about?
If you guessed the following, you would be right.
Fear of our own body – have you ever worried about being too fat, too skinny, big thighs, short neck, to name a few?
Fear of speaking our truth – Have you ever stopped yourself from saying “no” when you wanted to say “no”, but said “yes”, because you were taught to accommodate others at your own expense?
Fear of not enough – Have you ever started to speak with “I am no expert on this but …“ at a work meeting even though you know you are an expert and you know what you are talking about?
Fear of sounding “braggy” – Have you ever down played your accomplishments and successes because you were afraid to look like you are bragging?
Fear of not being enough – Have you ever stopped yourself from going for that promotion or asking for that project at work, or creating your dreams because you think you don’t know enough?
Fear of looking too strong/bitchy – Have you ever downplayed your knowledge, your gifts, your strengths because you are afraid to be seen as bitchy or too strong?
Fear of being judged – Have you ever been afraid to give an opinion because someone will judge you in a negative way?
Fear of not being liked – Have you ever been afraid of or delayed having the hard conversation with a staff member because you are afraid you will not be liked?
I can spend hours talking about the “fears” women live every day that get in the way of her powerful, purposeful and influential leadership; that are learned based on societal expectations. But I won’t do that! Instead, I will tell you …
Don’t be afraid of fearless leadership! It is not a myth!
But be very afraid of leading without courage, without using all your gifts and talents, and not stepping into your full potential because of fear. Be afraid of “what could have been if you just….”. Be afraid of ending your leadership journey without creating the impact you could have!
You were born fearless. None of these fears I am talking about were in your awareness when you were born. You were taught these fears. You learned these fears. You CAN unlearn them. I know you can!
Tell me, how heavy it feels to carry the load of all these fears on your back? Do you want to keep carrying them for the rest of your life?
Or are you ready to let it go and see what happens? If your answer is YES, I have an invitation for you!

If you like podcasts, you might be interested in listening Mary Strachan‘s B is for Brilliant Podcast. I was her guest and it was a powerful interview about fear and taking risks; how they go hand in hand. We also talked about how “thirst” for knowledge and learning can be a deterrent if it is not channeled wisely. As you listen, I would love for you to think about if fear of risk taking gets in the way of your dreams or if you stop yourself from moving forward because you “just must learn one more thing before…” just like I used to do.
